The Bombie Bar Fundraiser’s headline act for last week’s event at Anita’s Theatre almost didn’t make the stage!
Thirsty Merc lead singer Rai Thistlethwayte’s flight from Adelaide was delayed, forcing him to jump straight from the car onto the stage, performing like a pro- while also filling in for bass guitarist Phill Stock who was stuck in Victoria, also on a cancelled flight!
Despite the drama, Coalcliff Surf Club’s Bombie Fundraiser has been hailed a huge success. It’s fantastic to see such a cross-section of the local community unite for the fundraiser
The night doubled as a celebration of the surf club and local live music, with organisers offering heartfelt thanks to the musicians and the community, which turned out in force to be a part of this incredible event.
“Big thanks to Matt and Lochy Buggy, Declan Kelly and the Rising Sun, Garfish, ‘The Bombie All Stars’ and Coalciff SLSC’s very own Peter Jordan,” say the organisers. ” These incredible contributions from so many talented artists underlines the amazing support that has been built for our little surf club through the many successful years of The Bombie Bar.
“A big thanks also to Nick Garbett who along with Declan Kelly and Matt Smith who organised the three headline acts. They have been supporters of the Bombie Bar from the start.
“We’d also like to thank Nick from Anita’s Theatre for his assistance on the night, and the Bondi Rescue lifeguards who donated a signed shirt and book for the raffle,” say the organisers.
“The Bombie Bar has been a wonderful venue where people of all ages and from all over the Illawarra could gather to enjoy the talents of local musicians and meet up with each other, whilst supporting the surf club. Many expressed huge disappointment that this community “service” was no longer available to them.”
Meanwhile club officials say all future negotiations will be carried out in the right spirit to ensure the beloved Bombie Bar is preserved, alongside wonderfully tight-knit community of Coalcliff, and the extended Illawarra community which has taken such delight in the venue.
The club continues to explore exciting, alternate fundraising events so the club is to purchase critical lifesaving equipment and keep our beach safe for swimmers in the summers ahead.
