Who knew Bass and Flinders explored the Northern Illawarra?
Captain Matthew Flinders, George Bass and their servant William Martin explored the coastline south of Botany Bay in their small wooden boat, the Tom Thumb II, way back in 1796.
Flinders then went on to circumnavigate Australia and proclaim it to be a continent. He also confirmed Tasmania was in fact, an island.
Local artist and author Christine Hill has written a book about the journey of the Tom Thumb II which includes sketches of the cliffs of the Royal National park and the ‘coalcliffs’!
She’ll be talking about her book The Journey of Ton Thumb II: Bass and Flinders Explore the Illawarra Coast at Wollongong Library on Wednesday September 13 from 6pm-8pm.
