The first solo exhibition for local artist and musician Christopher Zanko will be held at Thirroul’s Egg and Dart gallery- starting this Friday night (November 10).
Chris, who is also in local band The Pinheads, has spent the last few months creating the works for ‘Umbra’, which he says means ominous shadowing.
“I spent a lot of time looking at shadows on local homes and fences,” says Chris, who is renown for his depiction of local iconic properties using the carving and chiseling of line and pattern.
“They are sculptural entities in the landscape,” he says. “They’re vulnerable to changing circumstance and to future demolition. To carve them is to set an image down with a level of density that ensures permanence, whether the existing structure remains or is destroyed.”
And the exhibition in Egg and Dart will be something special.
“We’ve spent the last few days hanging wallpaper that relates to the houses,” he says. “This exhibition is not just about the works, it’s about creating a whole space to make it more interesting.”
Chris graduated with a Bachelor of Creative Arts from Wollongong University with Distinction in Painting (BCA). He was a finalist in the Lloyd Rees Memorial Youth Art Award and winner of the Gongcrete Art Prize. He has exhibited in numerous group exhibitions including at Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Project Contemporary Art Space in Wollongong.
This is his first solo show at The Egg & Dart.
