Wombarra surfer Darcy DeClouett has taken out the SA Ripcurl Gromsearch.
He’s now hoping to compete against the best young surfers at the Australian championships at Narabeen in January.
Darcy took home an impressive trophy and hundreds of dollars worth of prizes and is hoping he’s done enough to qualify to compete at the next level.
He’s a member of Scarborough Boardriders, which has put in an impressive showing in the Gromsearch Comp. Coalcliff’s Billie Melinz made last year’s finals and Austinmer’s Finley McLaren finished second in the U14 boys at the NSW event in Maroubra last month.
Darcy’s Dad Christian says he’ll compete in the next round on the Sunshine Coast in December so hopefully will have done enough to make it through.
“Darcy has been taking his surfing really seriously,” he says ” He’s a student at Illawarra Sports High, where he’s doing daily strength, conditioning and flexibility workouts. He’s part of the school’s Talented Surfer Program, is having lessons with pro Nic Squires and is meeting with a sports psychologist, who helps all the young athletes get their heads in the game. And it’s really paid off.”
Gromsearch is the launchpad to a professional career, with many former winners competing on the World Tour.
“You need a lot of things to go your way,” says Christian. “Surfing is a huge leveller. But he’s a perfectionist and he’s driven, and he’s got a pretty mature style for a 16 year old, so he’s in a good place at the moment.”
Darcy is sponsored by DP Surfboards, Adelio Wetsuits, Captain Fin Co, Liive Vision and Farking Grips.
