Preparations for the 17th Annual Scarborough Art Show at Scarborough Primary School over the October long weekend are well underway for Friday night’s opening.
A team of talented and dedicated parents has everything in hand to make this year’s show one of the best ever. But that doesn’t happen without a lot of support, time and sacrifice.
This year, the show is in the capable hands of parents Leigh Healey and Shane Adams, who are co-ordinating the school’s 44 families to deliver an amazing weekend of art and entertainment.
“It’s a massive undertaking from the whole school community, ” says Leigh, ” It is loads of work, but but it’s the only fundraiser we do all year.
“We strip the classrooms bare, run the art show, and have to have them all put back together by the Tuesday. That alone is a major undertaking.
“It’s exhausting, but it’s also loads of fun. Last year we raised $25,000 which allowed the P&C to buy 20 iPads and upgrade 15 laptops. That’s why we do it. To help the kids.”
Shane has been associated with the school, and the Art Show, for 10 years, and it’s his third year at the helm.
“The idea came originally from two parents who wanted to celebrate the school’s artistic and creative community,” he says, “and it’s evolved into one of the area’s best-loved annual events. “We try to make the show as professional as possible, and Opening Night is always loads of fun.”
“Tiffany Sinton from the Glamma Rays is a parent at the school. She organises all the live music, including performances from the children, so it’s not just about the art.
“Expressions of interest from the artists have now closed,” says Shane. “This year we have around 150 artists represented, that’s 30 in the craft section and the rest in the gallery space.
“We are proud to have established artist Tanya Stubbles once again showing her work. She’s been a parent at Scarborough for more than 10 years so has a long history with our art show, as well as being an amazingly successful and respected artist.
“We are also so lucky to once again have Ashley Frost taking part again this year, along with so many other talented artists. It’s going to be a fantastic weekend.
The Scarborough Art Show will be held at Scarborough Public School. Opening night is Friday October 2 with the art show running Saturday October 3 and Sunday October 4 from 10am-4pm.
