Everyone’s invited to be apart of the Illawarra’s Biggest Beach Clean-Up this Sunday from 3pm-5pm at Port Kembla beach.
Local group Surfrider Foundation South Coast is among 10 community groups backing the clean up, which will see litter collected form the beach and rock platforms. Project Waves 4 Water will also take part, as will Fair Food Foragers and Intrepid Landcare Illawarra.
The clean is being run in conjunction with the Environment Protection Authority’s PicItUp program, which encourages us to pick up litter on our daily walks and take a picture of it on our phones, so the data can be collated nationally.
Wollongong Mayor Gordon Bradbery says in 2012 the number of items in the marine debris database exceeded 1.4 million. “This is a massive amount of plastic debris being swallowed up by our marine life,” he says. “I encourage the community to get involved and support the beach clean up at Port Kembla, and I extend my thanks to the many volunteer groups who have already signed up.
There will be prizes, a sand-sculpting competition and stalls, to make the event loads of fun for everyone, while doing a fantastic thing for our local environment.
