The Boatshed up the northern end of Austinmer Beach is in for a makeover.
Wollongong Council, in conjunction with Austinmer Surf Lifesaving Club, will spend half a million dollars extending the current facility to include a gym and a lifeguard station- so lifeguards can view the beach in inclement weather.
Peloton Constructions Pty Ltd has won the tender for the project, which will see lifeguards equipped with a change room and kitchen area in line with new Lifeguard regulations.
The new building will be in-keeping with the current buildings at the beach, with the nearby, heritage listed Norfolk Island pine considered in the design process.
Work will also be carried out on the existing boatshed, including the replacement of roof sheeting.
Construction is set to begin in coming weeks.
