The mining industry attracts its fair share of bad press relating to environmental issues – lately there has been a publicised issue between the miners and Peabody Energy at Helensburgh. There is currently a peaceful protest at the gates of Peabody as the miners seek to demonstrate their rejection of various terms in their agreement with their employer.
“It all started when we were due to renew our enterprise agreement – it ran out at the end of the financial year.” said Helensburgh CFMEU Lodge President Andy Davey.
“We were talking to the company three months prior to that and we had come up with the clauses that we were happy with – there were six particular clauses that the current management team were working on at the time – we were under the impression that we were heading in the right direction. We left the money side of it until the end – the company had agreed to the clauses, we were confident that we were there… we started talking about money and asked for a 4% pay increase over a four-year period. The company said they couldn’t afford it and offered us 0% for every year over 4 years.”
