Helensburgh Netball Courts will be transformed this Sunday into a pop-up car boot sale. You’ll find fresh coffee, home made cakes baked fresh by the netball mums, and new and used goods at bargain prices.
All proceeds from the markets will be put towards getting the netball courts resurfaced. Estimated to cost up to $40,000 to resurface, they are looking beyond chocolate box sales for fundraising revenue. Kellie Skiller, a player in the Helensburgh Mixtures senior netball team, explains, “It can cost up to $40,000 to resurface the courts. We’re looking at holding various fundraising events through the club to make up some of it.”
The courts were resurfaced four years ago, but the cracks are beginning to show.
“The courts we have are starting to break up and are getting dangerous for the girls. We continually have to repair them before each game, hosing off grime and filling in the cracks, making sure there’s no trip hazards,” says Kellie.
“It’s important we get them resurfaced as soon as possible, especially with the junior teams training on the courts. We use them every day,” Kellie continues.
The club also hosts a ladies summer competition on Tuesday nights, which will risk forfeiting if the courts can’t be fixed in time.
Helensburgh Netball Club has a big history in the area, playing on these courts for the last 29 years. Last year was the club’s best year yet, with eight teams from the club winning in the grand finals.
The resurfacing will allow the club to keep powering ahead in the Illawarra competition.
Kellie hopes the community spirit and fundraising efforts will be strong enough to get the resurfacing done by the end of this year.
‘Everyone involved in the club are really great, always pitching in when asked,’ says Kellie.
“We also do a meat raffle every second Sunday at Helensburgh Tradies, which is another great community support,” Kellie says.
It will cost you a gold coin donation to enter. Be sure to stop by between 9:30am and 3:30pm this Sunday 22nd June at Helensburgh Netball Courts – $2 coin donation to enter.
