Sad news today for a business owner and the 150 people who have been enjoying a Friday night Vietnamese meal at Sharkys.
Since the start of Summer, An Chut Chut have set up shop at the popular Coledale beach, drawing quite a crowd of locals who’ve been enjoying a meal by the ocean.
Following complaints received, Council’s Ranger Services has investigated and asked the proprietor to cease trading as they do not hold the appropriate license or development consent to operate on the site.
An Chut Chat owner Dan Bishop is a Northern Illawarra local who has lived in the area for 25 years. He and partner Yen have been running the stand here at Coledale and also at Winding, and have now closed down their operation.
“We just wanted to sell food one day a week to an area that’s not being serviced by anyone,” says Dan. “It became a community event with locals coming and bringing their friends along.
“We hold no hard feelings toward the Council. But if they hadn’t received the complaint they won’t have shut us down, so that’s disappointing.
“We sell high-quality, fresh food. We just aren’t allowed to sell it on Council land!”
Dan says they may apply for a permit, but at the moment, they’re just considering their options.
“We also want to say thank you to all our patrons, both for coming along, and for being respectful of the beach environment. We use biodegradable packaging, but everyone always cleaned up their own rubbish, and although we did a scout-around at the end of every night, there was rarely anything to pick up. We may be back, or something better might come along. Time will tell.”
