A recent fundraising event at the Novotel has drawn on the strengths and support of locals, managing to raise $47,000 to help find a cure for Vanishing White Matter Disease, which is threatening her life.
The function was attended by Thirroul real estate agent and long-time Northern Illawarra resident Nicole Starling and her family. Nicole’s son, nine year old Kai, is one of Chloe’s super-special friends.
At the end of a particularly gruelling game of ‘Heads and Tails’, two people remained standing, both in the running for a signed and framed Dragons jersey. One was Kai and one was an incredible young woman, Claire, from the Balls Paddock pre school in Woonona.
The big prize, a signed, framed Dragons jersey donated by Coastal Windows and Doors, was of particular interest to Kai who is one of the team’s biggest supporters. “He never misses a game,” says Nicole. “Either we go along to watch, we watch on TV, or if it’s not televised, we head down to Beaches to watch it together over a glass of Ginger Beer. He loves the team.
“Kai suffers from Dyspraxia, which is a speech problem,” says Nicole, “but he still manages to say ‘football’ and ‘Dragons!'”
When the game’s final coin was tossed, Kai leapt for joy, thinking he’d won. But he didn’t- and the prize went to Claire.
Aware of Kai’s bitter disappointment, Claire marched up to the little boy and, to his delight and amazement, promptly handed him the jersey!
“He still can’t believe it,” says Nicole. “He keeps going in to check it’s still there! It was such a beautiful gesture by Claire which has made an enormous impact on Kai and the rest of our family. We can’t thank her enough!”
Chloe had an incredible night too and her support team have sent out huge thank you to all who attended, donated and helped on the night.
