This Sunday is Clean Up Australia Day.
Beach Clean Ups Illawarra will be at Thirroul Beach, working to clear up the mess and the plastic, before it finds its way into the ocean, and they’d love your help!
Spokesman Adam Woods says the group comes from both an aesthetic and an environmental perspective. “It’s really important to keep our beaches clean for the families that use them,” he says. “And it’s just as important to keep plastic away from our marine life.
“All of the members of our group live locally and we are all passionate about the cleanliness of our oceans. The beaches are definitely worse in Summer, but we actively clean the beaches all year round. We are all aware of the dangers of plastics in our waterways. It’s tragic for our marine life, so we try to pick it up before it gets into the water.”
Adam says everyone is welcome to join, or to just pop along and start picking up rubbish.
If you’d like to be a part of the group you can find them on Facebook, or turn up at Thirroul Beach at 8.30am on Sunday morning, armed with your gloves and a plastic bag! Details are HERE
