Two local environmental organisations have claimed Wollongong’s highest environmental accolade at the Rise and Shine Environmental Awards overnight.
Coledale’s Susie Crick and her Surfrider Foundation and Beach Clean Ups Illawarra teamed up to collect the Basil Ryan Award, a 30 year old award encouraging people to take pride in their local environment.

The Surfrider Foundation and Beach Clean Ups work together to clean beaches along the Illawarra coast, with Mayor Gordon Bradbury saying our beaches are cleaner thanks to the individuals, community groups and businesses involved in environmental projects.
“People in this city are passionate about the environment and our Rise and Shine volunteers are community leaders who are working hard and helping everyone achieve our community goal of making Wollongong a truly sustainable city.”
Susie also collected a Gold Award from the Lord Mayor for her coordination of the Surfrider Foundation’s environmental initiatives, in particular, her drain-stencilling campaign to remind people litter ends up in the ocean.
