The Northern Illawarra could have its own comedy venue by the end of this year.
This follows the success of Wollongong Comedy, which is just about to celebrate is 10th Anniversary, becoming one of the Illawarra’s leading live entertainment options.
Current operators Shane Moon and Stuart McPherson have been running the business for four years and are keen to expand. They’ve had some impressive names making locals laugh, including Mick Meredith, Chris Rayburn and most recently, Peter Berner.
Wollongong Comedy now runs three venues. Their main room is in The Basement Bar of the Master Builder’s Club which has comedy on the second and last Saturdays of the month. There’s Little Joe’s Small Bar in Dapto and they run an ‘Open Mic’ night at Jane’s in Wollongong’s Flinders Street on the first Thursday of the month. But Shane says they’re looking for a venue in the north.
“Wollongong Comedy founder Marty Henchin has done a couple of pop up shows at Wombarra Bowling Club which were really successful,” she says. “Our goal is to have a regular room in either Helensburgh or Thirroul. We have big-name comedians playing at our venues and we’d love to expand. And the Open Mic nights are a great opportunity for people to try new material and get some stage time.
“It’s a cheap night out (tickets are just $15) and it’s something a little bit different,” she says. “It’s budget friendly and the atmosphere is the bomb! We are really excited about expanding North and looking forward to bringing top-class comedy to people right across the Illawarra.”
