Northern Illawarra (Ward One) Greens Councillor Jill Merrin is confident the State Government’s plan to introduce a 10c refundable deposit on drink containers will help keep our beaches clean.
Councillor Merrin says Wollongong Council has been behind the idea for years, so is delighted the idea will be introduced next July.
“The evidence is strong that the refund system encourages people to take responsibility for their plastic, glass and aluminium drink containers,” she says. “The Container Deposit Scheme is expected to reduce litter by 45% and half the tide of marine plastic pollution.”
Councillor Merrin says studies show 21,000 bottles and cans across Australia are being thrown out every minute!
“South Australia has been running a similar scheme for more than 40 years,” she says, ” and their recycling rate for drink containers is as high as 80%!
“We are hopeful this scene will make a huge difference to the amount of litter both on our beaches and in landfill.
“The scheme should also stimulate the recycling industry and create new jobs,” she says. “The Greens warmly welcome this decision and look forward to seeing the changes in place. By putting a value on our waste we are taking the first step toward a zero-waste future.”
