This years Helensburgh Country Fair on Saturday 26th October promises to be the beginning of a new era for this annual event, as it makes a welcome return to the town centre – some 15 years ago, it was banished from the main street, and existed only in Charles Harper Park. This year the event will not only sprawl around the town centre, with the inclusion of market stalls around the pub, but also all the way along the main street, with 28 stalls planned for Walker Street.
Along with this change comes a need for the ‘country fair’ to live up to the expectation for wholesome, family entertainment – not quite what you may relate to Jimi Hendrix and Lemmy from Motorhead, but our interview reveals a distant connection.
“I was living in London in the 60’s and I did meet Jimmy and found him to be fairly quiet guy, very much into the ladies and the recreational stuff.” said David Oliphant, entertainment coordinator for the Helensburgh Country Fair, “I had a 2 bedroom bed-sitter for quite a long time with a guy called Lemmy who was the singer for Motorhead – now Lemmy was a roadie for Jimmy in those days. Lemmy and I had a lot of fun times in London around 1965.”
As part of the new format of the Helensburgh Country Fair, entertainment will now extend throughout the town, and the Lions Club is seeking involvement from the local community.
“I am looking for acoustic acts – it’s an opportunity for locals to come and play their instruments – whatever instrument they want to play, they can put down a guitar case and have gold coins put in, they can make themselves a little bit of pocket money, and have some fun.”
School Age Players very welcome – no busker’s licence required on this day. Preference given to Acoustic Acts as power is not supplied.
