Ward4 Councillor Mithra Cox is working to allow food trucks to set up at selected destinations across Wollongong to encourage a more vibrant night life across the city- including the Northern Illawarra.
This follows the closure of a popular van selling Vietnamese food which operated regularly at Sharkys – closed down for failing to obtain the necessary permits.
The matter was raised in Council earlier this week with Councillor David Brown expressing concerns about the impact the vans would have on existing restaurants. “We don’t want food trucks to compete with bricks and mortar restaurants,” he says.
Councillor Cox believes the food trucks would attract a different crowd, saying they’re used around the world to promote nightlife and encourage people to use public spaces at night.
Council will investigate what land should be made available to food vendors and where there needs to me more food options. They’ll also look into the experiences of other councils.
