The claws are out over the proposed merger of Shellharbour and Wollongong Councils because it seems Shellharbour doesn’t want to be associated with the Northern Illawarra!
Mayor Marianne Saliba says the Shellharbour community fighting hard to protect their own identity.
“We don’t see any connection between the people in Albion Park and the people in Helensburgh,” she says. “We are vastly different people with different aspirations and different dreams.”
“Albion Park, for example, has a strong history in Shellharbour City. Some of our families go back six generations. They want to protect our history and the want to protect our future.
“We, the Council, want to be there to support them in that.
“The people of Shellharbour see Wollongong the way the people of Wollongong see Sydney. We only go there when we have to.”
Submissions regarding the proposed merger need to be submitted by February 28. This can be a letter simply explaining your concerns.
For details on where to send it, please contact Wollongong Council.
