Don’t go lurking around the escarpment at night between now and Christmas because deer-hunters are out and about.
For 15 nights the Northern Illawarra Wild Deer Management team will be working to keep our region’s deer population under control.
One of their focus areas will be Helensburgh.
Program co-ordinator Michael Knez has told the Mercury they are not going to eradicate the deer, just bring their numbers down to a ‘manageable problem’.
Since 2011, 1900 deer have been killed, but they still cause damage to the environment and property, and pose a risk on our roads and along the train line.
Mr Knez says it’s important the cull goes ahead. “If it doesn’t, we’d go back to the bad old days when deer entered the supermarket at Fairy Meadow!”
