‘Dr Rip’ is Dr Rob Brander, a surf scientist from the University of New South Wales and a Stanwell Park local. Rob has been studying beaches and rip currents for over 25 years and gained his nickname for his habit of putting harmless purple dye in rip currents for demonstrations.
From the journey of tiny little sand grains on your favourite beach, to the massive swell that rolls in during big storms, to how to spot a deadly rip – this talk is for anyone who loves the beach environment. It has a strong safety theme throughout. A demonstration of how rips behave using harmless purple dye will occur after the presentation.
