The Coalition Against Duck Shooting has contacted Lord Mayor Cr Gordon Bradbery, urging Wollongong Council to adopt a passive approach to removing water birds from the Northern Illawarra’s public pools.
This follows reports of the mistreatment of native Australian Wood Ducks at Helensburgh and Corrimal pools, where ducks have been trapped then euthanised to keep the water and surrounding pool area clean.
The community has been outraged by the mistreatment, especially after one duck was drowned at Helensburgh Pool, in clear view of visiting families.
Manager of the Coalition Against Duck Shooting Alyssa Wormald says they’re appalled by the abuse.”Trapping birds and taking them away to be euthanised by the feral animal contractor is clearly not in the interest of the birds, nor is it acceptable to the general public,” she says.
Ms Wormald says the Australian Wood Ducks can be, and have been, successfully relocated to suitable wetlands.
“Inevitably, water birds will be attracted to swimming pools, which is why, after the relocation, the council should invest in Eagle Eye Bird Scarers, which is an inexpensive solution which will provide long-term protection for the pool.”
The Coalition is imploring Council to consider this alternative.
