Great news for the local environment, and Coledale residents, with AARNet deciding not to proceed with their plans to drill through the escarpment from Darkes Forrest and underground through Coledale.
The telecommunications company, owned by 38 Australian Universities (including UOW) and the CSIRO had issued local residents with notice of the plans, with work set to commence next week. You can read that story HERE
The plan was to undertake feasibility studies in a bid to expand their network of cable.
But thanks to media pressure and locals objecting, the telco has issued a notice saying they will not be proceeding with the plan.
A spokesperson for AARNet says the company does have rights to access both private and public land, however they are keen to work with landowners to achieve their goals.
“We were in the early stages of planning and nothing was confirmed,” she says “We provide infrastructure, just like water and power companies, and we work to bridge digital divides to provide educational opportunities to more people .
“But we will partner with the community, so in this instance we won’t be proceeding with the project.”
