Work is still not complete at Austinmer, but now Coalcliff Pool is about to get an upgrade!
The Stanwell Park Rock Pool Reserve money will be used to fund the project. This money was collected decades ago to build an ocean pool at Stanwell Park, however when that project proved not to be viable, the money was placed in trust and has been there ever since. You can read more about that HERE
Wollongong City Council has accepted a tender for improvement works, to address natural erosion, structural issues and public amenity.
Mayor Gordon Bradbury says the work will help extend the life of the rock pool, as well as making it easier for people to use the facility.
“A few years ago when we spoke with the community about what public assets they valued most, we got the very strong message that people love our rock pools,’’ he says.
“These works will help extend the life of the rock pool, and also make it easier for people to get in and enjoy a dip.
“Working on rock pools is always challenging, as we need to work around whatever conditions the ocean and weather throw at us. We’ll start work in May, and hopefully have the pool open again for swimmers by summer.”
The eastern seawall will be repaired, the concrete capped and the pool floor repaired. The footpath and stairs will be upgraded with a new path built over the rock platform to connect the pool. A shade structure will also be installed over the raised shower area, while drainage in this area will be improved.
While work is underway the pool will be closed to the public. Council will also continue work on the sea wall near the Coalcliff Surf Club.
