A motion will be put to Wollongong Council tonight to upgrade the existing fire trail linking Phillip Street Thirroul and Foothills Rd in Austinmer to provide another way in and out of the Northern Illawarra.
Councillor Jennelle Rimmer has moved the motion saying the fire trail could be used for general traffic in emergencies- including when Lawrence Hargrave Drive is closed by an accident.
The motion acknowledges the existing traffic situation saying residents of Thirroul and suburbs to the north currently experience lengthy delays.
According to Cr Rimmer’s background information in the Business Paper, “If a fatality was to occur the road network would be shut down for hours. “This means people would be unable to get home to their families and loved ones. It also means emergency services would be significantly delayed if they needed to respond to other call outs north of the accident.”
She says the fire trail is currently well-maintained and clearly identified.
Council will discuss the proposal at tonight’s meeting.
