There will be a bit of digging going on in Austinmer next week.
Wollongong Council is planning an upgrade to the War Memorial area- but first- they need to know what’s going on below.
Council workers, under aborist supervision, will hand-dig trenches around the base of the nearby pine trees to map their giant roots.
That map will then be used to ensure the safety of the trees as Council plans the new-and-improved War Memorial outside the Surf Lifesaving clubhouse.
A Council spokesman says the digging will take place in selected sections and will have no adverse impact on the trees.
The work will be carried out on Tuesday October 24. It will take one day and barriers will be erected while the digging is done- then everything will be put back the way it was.
“Environmental issues have been considered with the preparation of a Review of Environmental Factors,” says the spokesperson. “It is not part of an Aboriginal Heritage Site but Council has undertaken a due diligence process as part of its environmental review for this project and will continue to consult with Aboriginal groups.”
