Scarborough Boardrider’s Billie Melinz has won her way through to the national finals of the Ripcurl GromSearch.
The finals will see Australia’s best surfers under the age of 16 line up to vye for the title, with an alumni that reads like a who’s who of Australian surfing, including Owen Wright, Gabriel Medina, Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons, Tyler Wright and Alana Blanchard.
Billie, from Coalcliff, is a student at Bulli High School. An exceptional surfer, she’s made the U16 finals since she was 12, finishing 5th, then fourth, then third, then second, so mathematically, this should be her year!
Her father Ed says she’s 16 so this is her last shot at the title. “Fingers crossed things go her way on the day,” he says.
Two excellent results at the State events in Maroubra and Torquay in Victoria saw the Coalcliff surfer earn her spot in the competition, which will be held at Narabeen next January, with the winner travelling overseas to compete in the International Gromsearch.
