If you live around Helensburgh or Otford, don’t plan to hang out washing on Saturday.
The NSW Rural Fire Service is planning a hazard reduction burn along Otford Rd on Saturday May 21.
Around 20 RFS members will conduct the operation, which is on private property, with the burn expected to take most of the day.
Acting Illawarra District Manager Superintendent Greg Wardel says hazard burns are vital in the reduction of the intensity of bushfires.
“It’s important we take advantage of the suitable weather conditions as soon as they occur,” he says. “Each year only a small window of opportunity exists where weather conditions are conducive for controlled burns. For a hazard reduction to be successful we require the right wind and temperature conditions and for the ground fuels to be sufficiently dry.”
Motorists are advised to take extreme care when driving through smoke.
