The NSW Rural Fire Service has planned two hazard reduction burns in the Northern Illawarra this coming weekend.
Saturday, brigades from the Illawarra will burn around Garrawarra Hospital. 60 firefighters will be on site and smoke is expected to impact on the M1 Motorway.
Sunday, members from the Helensburgh, Otford and Darkes Forest Brigades will carry out a small burn along the Old Princes Highway.
Zone manager, Superintendant Richard Cotterill, sayas hazard reduction is vital in reducing the intensity of bushfires. “These controlled burns will help protect properties and assets in the Helensburgh area and also assist our firefighters to control any future bushfires in the area.
“This operation is an important part of our Bushfire Risk Management Plan and there will be more burns in the area in the near future.
Superintendant Cotterill says they only have a small window of opportunity to carry out a successful controlled burn. “We require the right wind and temperature conditions,” he says. “The ground fuels have to be sufficiently dry.
“This weekend, we advise Helensburgh residents to take the appropriate precautions,” he says. “Keep doors and windows closed, remove washing from clothes lines and make sure pets are in a protected area.”
And he says if you’re driving through smoke, slow down and take care. “Keep your windows up and turn your headlights on.”
