Illawarra Coke Company has made public their current position on the rehabilitation of the Coalcliff Cokeworks.
The company has produced a newsletter to be distributed to the Coalcliff Community, detailing where they stand- with the focus on conservation.
Director Kate Strahorn says they’re keen to engage with the community as they navigate the future of the old cokeworks site. ” We have launched a basic website because we want to assure people, to ease their fears,” she says. “This is where people can register interest or ask questions.”
“There is a long way to go in this process, but we would like to see all the land currently zoned E2 remain conservation. In fact we’d love to see the Grand Pacific Walk pass through the land. It’s been locked up by industry for 100 years. This is our chance to open it to conservation and community open space.
“The challenge will come with development, and we are investigating that on a small portion of the site but it would be a travesty not to conserve the bulk of the land and to incorporate beautiful walking tracks and some form of ecotourism.”
Ms Strahorn says there is a long way to go in the process and they are working through details. No decisions have been made on applications to rezone the land as Illawarra Coke Company works to gain a better understanding of the site.
