This term, Thirroul Academy of Music Dance Drama launched a new class type – Rock Band! This is a one hour lesson with one of the tutors, where students are placed in an environment where they can put all their learning into practice – by playing with other musicians.
Each band will have one or two vocalists, a combination of electric and acoustic guitarists, a bass guitarist, a keyboardist and a drummer. The students will work on a range of repertoire, eventually building to local public performances. “The rehearsal studio will be fitted out with a JamHub and an electric drum kit in order for the rock bands to rehearse silently!” says Liam Cooper, operations manager at Thirroul Academy, “The Jamhub unit enables up to 7 instruments to be plugged in simultaneously, with each player able to have their own separate headphone mix. This will allow us to run the rock bands anytime throughout the week, without disturbing lessons happening in neighbouring studios! Currently, we have rock bands on Friday at 4pm (Junior) and 5pm (Senior) – these are booked out. We are starting two new rock bands on Wednesday at 6pm and Thursday at 6pm and if they get filled we will create more.”
Liam has been teaching at Thirroul Academy for 4 years, and after feeling that the studio could benefit from a bit more direction and vision, presented owners Ruth and Barney Ellevsen with a proposition to create an Operations Manager position with a business plan that he drew up late 2012. “As of this year, I’ve stepped into that role which has involved things like promoting the studio through events such as our recent Open Day and creating more performance opportunities for students like our recent showcase at Thirroul Seaside & Arts Festival. I’m also working on increasing our social media presence through Facebook as well as the day-to-day management and maintenance of the studio. Most exciting though, is the introduction of our new classes – vocal ensembles and rock bands! The rock bands are a great opportunity for students who are currently only receiving one-on-one tuition and playing on their own, to experience what it’s like playing in a band – jamming with each other and making new friends! It takes their musicianship and performance skills to a whole new level. The rock bands will, under the guidance of one of our talented tutors, learn a range of repertoire that they will eventually perform at local venues and our own Thirroul Academy Showcase Concerts. Students don’t need to be enrolled in a private lesson to be involved in the rock bands, it’s open to everyone!”
The included photo is of our Junior Rock Band at 4pm on Friday afternoons. The band features Avril on Vocals, Sam on Drums, Trey on Electric Guitar, Ethan on Keyboard and tutor Callum directing from the Bass Guitar. This is a photo of them rehearsing out loud in our waiting room, but from next term they’ll be in our silent band studio!
