That’s the question Thirroul’s Stephanie Meads asks her children every night, and one she’s hoping more people across the Northern Illawarra and the world will be contemplating this Christmas.
Kindness advocates and local mums Stephanie Mead and Jodie Cooper originally came up with the idea of replacing their traditional Advent Calendar with a ‘Kindness Calendar’, to encourage their own kids to think about other people, and carry out random acts of kindness (that don’t need parental input) in the lead up to Christmas.
Now, it’s become a phenomenon.
“We initially came up with 24 ways children can demonstrate kindness. That’s evolved and we now have a calendar which we are in the process of having printed. So many teachers have supported us, so we will distribute the calendars to the Year 5 students of 100 primary schools, which will mean a lot of acts of kindness!
Steph says it’s all about teaching children to think of others, and making our community a better place to live.
“I will often pay for the next person’s coffee when I visit a local coffee shop. It’s interesting to see their initial reaction, but an act of kindness makes everyone feel good. It also helps connect our community.
“An ‘act of kindness’ can be as little as a friendly smile, a compliment, or saying ‘good morning’ to the people you pass. It makes the giver and the receiver feel good, ” she says.
“Once we put it out there, everyone started jumping on the kindness bandwagon. So many people want to be a part of the project because they understand the importance of kindness in our lives. Businesses have also asked for calendars they can put in the workplace.
“As an act kindness, a wonderful person has set us up a website, where we now have free downloadable Kindness Calendars for business and for families, with prompts for people to carry out small, but significant tasks.”
The idea has been embraced nationwide, with Chanel 7’s DAILY EDITION recently running a story on ‘The Kindness Crew’.
Wollongong’s Novotel is also supportive of the Kindness Crew. They’ve offered to host, free of charge as an act of kindness, a launch party in the Lobby Bar on October 20 from 5.30pm-7pm.
Everyone is welcome to attend the event to discover how you can implement random acts of kindness into your life.
In the meantime, you can download the Kindness Calendar from the website HERE
