More than 500 children will visit Stanwell Park on Wednesday November 9 for the Lawrence Hargrave Memorial Kite Day.
Organiser Rob Deacon says the day aims to celebrate the achievements of Lawrence Hargrave to aviation history.
“On November 12 1894, Lawrence Hargrave was on Stanwell Park beach when he became the first man in the world to achieve vertical lift-off while tethered to four box-kites,” says Rob. ” This was one of the most significant milestones in the development of manned flight.”
To remember this incredible event, which happened right here in the Northern Illawarra, children from Stanwell Park, Otford, Coledale and Thirroul Public Schools will gather with children from Wawrick Farm school (which is also on Lawrence Hargrave Drive) to watch sky-divers deliver the flag.
This will be followed by the Lawrence Hargrave-Eric Waite Memorial Fly Over of several historic aircraft from HARS including the Super Constellation Connie.
“If wind conditions allow,” says Rob, “there will be an attempt to re-enact the Lawrence Hargrave lift-off using full sized replicas of Hargrave’s box-kites.”
Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy the spectacular celebrations.
