Sixteen athletes from the Helensburgh and District Little Athletics Club have qualified for the state championships later this month – Krystall Blackwell and Mitchell Pepper head the list, both competing in four events and both winning medals last year at the same event.
Krystall currently holds the gold medals for 60m, 100m and 200m hurdles, last weekend finished second in the state multies, and also represented NSW in the Australian Primary School Athletics.
Mitchell also finished second last weekend, picked up the bronze medal in javelin at state last year, and is also competing in the Australian Junior Championships this month at Perth.
Dave Scott from HLAC says, “This is most we’ve had go to state… last year it was ten and couple of seasons ago we only had three. Last weekend was the multies, in which Krystal and Mitchell got silver with four others in top eight, out of 13 competing great effort by all. It’s pleasing to see a couple of athletes who have been close in past seasons make it to state, such as Mikayla Callahan, Jane Vodiiciar and Michaela Scutts. Other strong achievers include Tom King, Dane Burgmann, Kurt Picken, Beau Whitaker, Bradmann Bassingthwaight, Lisa Towie and Nicholas Plaza- McCune, Brianna King, Bethany Arentz, Billy Dublewicz and Myles Chabi.”
“Along with those 16 we also have Sarah Walsh competing in the AWD Long jump and 100, she is currently the Australian u/16 champion in 100 and 200 , finished 2nd in Long Jump. She also won 100, 200 and Long jump in state AWD championships last weekend, and is T44 Australian record holder for 100u/14, u/16 and 200 u/20.”
