Seems theres a new kind of thief in our midst.
Local surf lifesaving clubs, which are run by volunteers, collect cans and bottles, helping raise badly-needed funds to keep our beaches safe.
The Scarborough Wombarra community has been generous and the Surf Club had built up quite a collection in their new cage. But someone not affiliated with the club has emptied it out.
It’s thought the small club is not the first in the Northern Illawarra to lose their collection
President Bindi Adams is urging local residents who have been collecting for the club to continue to do so. “Please hang on to your cans and bottles,” she says, “or drop them in to the club when someone is there. We will not be using the new bin until it has been fitted with an anti-theft swing lid, and we will have to look into some video surveillance.”
