Coledale’s Lucas Wrice hits the water when the World Junior Surf Championships kick off at Bombo Beach today.
17 year old Luke is a student at Bulli High. He picked up a wildcard to the prestigious event, which brings together the best young surfers from across the world, vying for the title of World Junior Champion.
Kiama will host the event from January 4 through until January 13, and has also secure the rights to next year’s event, which Tourism Minister Stuart Ayres says will give Kiama worldwide exposure and attract thousands of visitors to the region.
Kiama MP Gareth Ward says the WSL World Junior Championships will see Kiama’s beaches promoted to the world.
“The Championships will be seen right across the surfing world through a live webcast, TV show highlight package and inclusion in other WSL Championship Tour events.”
Mr Ward says the event also brings the stars of the future to the region. “Previous winners of this event include Sally Fitzgibbons, Joel Parkinson, Andy Irons and current world champion Adriano de Souza, so this is a fantastic way for locals to check out the stars of the future.”
