It’s believed a serial fire-lighter could be responsible for last night’s blaze at McCauley’s Beach.
Fire crews were called to the area around 7pm last night to extinguish what they describe as a slow-moving blaze on the eastern side of the bike path.
They had been called to the same area on Saturday night after it’s believed someone lit multiple fires also along the eastern side of the bike path, in the same general area.
“We received a call around 9.15pm on Saturday night to several scrub fires in the McCauley’s area,” says Bulli Fire Station Officer Tony Powell. ” They were only small blazes but there were a few so together they probably cleared around 100 square meters.”
Station Officer Powell says due to perfect weather conditions, fire fighters managed to use the blaze to their advantage, turning the fire into an impromptu hazard reduction burn. “It’s really dry in there and probably due for a burn off,” he says. “Although the days have been warm the nights still have a high moisture content. It’s the perfect condition to burn off, so we let it go for a while.
“All the fires have been on the eastern side of the bike path and there’s been a westerly wind, so they’ve been slow, evolving fires and no properties have ever been in danger,” he says.
Fire Crews are watching with interest to see if the fire-lighter will make it a hat-trick and set more scrub ablaze tonight.
