As debate continues over the closure of Lawrence Hargrave Drive at Bald Hill for an extended period next year, plans are being put in place to encourage locals to catch the train.
Throughout the closure in 2020, more express trains will stop at Stanwell Park.
Train services across the region have come under heavy fire since a timetable review in 2014 implemented the ‘hub’ system, sidelining local stations and forcing the majority of commuters to travel via Thirroul and Helensburgh stations. Commuters lobbied long and hard for changes to the timetable but the Government held fast, managing only a trial of additional services at Austinmer.
Now, it is planned that during the closure Stanwell Park, the timetable will be relaxed so commuters will receive two extra weekday services to Sydney during the morning peak and one extra service from Sydney during the afternoon peak period.
On weekends, it is planned that Stanwell Park station will receive eight extra services to Sydney and six extra services from Sydney each day. The Government says the extra services will mean that Stanwell Park will receive one weekend service to and from Sydney every hour for most of the day.
This will be a temporary arrangement to provide an additional transport option to help the community go about their daily activities during this essential work.
The slope repair works are set to start after May 2020.
Community consultation is currently underway on the four options under consideration:
- Option A – Two stages of four-week closures during the winter months
- Option B – One eight-week road closure during the winter months
- Option C – 16-day full road closure (during winter school holidays), plus six to eight months of full road closures on weekdays from 9am-3pm with only one lane open to traffic (under alternating traffic flow) at all other times until the work is completed
- Option D – 16-day road closure (during winter school holidays), plus four to six months of full road closures on weekdays from 9am to 3pm, full road closures from Sunday to Thursday at night from 8pm to 4am and only one lane open to traffic (under alternating traffic flow) at all other times until the work is completed.
The community is encouraged give feedback before 5pm Friday 20 December.
