New developments means work at Austinmer Ocean Pool could be completed before Spring.
The work started in 2014, however ongoing difficulties mean the job is still not complete. You can read that story HERE
Now, an exciting new invention could see the end of the project, and the car parking spaces at the northern end freed up once and for all!
A spokesman for Wollongong City Council says following years of difficulties battling tides and swell to install pre-cast concrete panels on the pool’s southern wall, they’ve had to think outside the box.
“ Initially the plan was to complete this work using a combination of both pre-cast panels and in-situ formwork and concrete pours,” he says. ” However, the lack of low tide and low swell opportunities mean we’ve been unable to complete this work.
“In response, the pre-cast panels have been redesigned to include fewer panels. The three panels, which are similar to an upside-down ‘U’ shape will be craned in to place and cap the existing wall.
“They weigh about five tonnes each.
“The new panels have been manufactured locally and are expected to be delivered on-site by the end of March.
“They’re currently ‘curing’ to ensure they’re strong enough to withstand the heavy seas that smash into the eastern seawall of the pool.
“Four of the existing panels that are already on-site will be used to repair an eroded section of the rock pool in the southern pool’s north-east corner.
“Both rock pools remain open and Council thanks the community for their ongoing patience as we work through this challenging project.”
