The Northern Illawarra traffic situation has not been helped at all by last week’s state budget.
Keira MP Ryan Park has been calling for work to commence on the extension to Memorial Drive, however no funding has been allocated for the coming 12 months.
The final stage of the road would link the existing road with Bulli Pass, easing congestion through the Bulli village. A corridor of land between the Bulli Pass hairpin and the northern end of the Drive has been zoned as road reservation since 2009. There is also a road corridor between the bottom of Bulli Pass and the end of Memorial Drive.
“The extension of Memorial Drive is a key piece of infrastructure,” he says. “We need to see funding allocated so that project can get underway and ease congestion through this really busy part of the Northern Illawarra.
“The problem with this Government is they don’t consider it to be worthy of planning money, but everyone in the Northern Illawarra knows this truly is a missing link, particularly with new suburbs coming on line. Congestion s just getting worse for people forced to travel to work.
“Every day of the week I get people complaining about congestion along that road. Until the link is built, we need to look at better ways to manage traffic and better management of traffic lights.
“But nothing will make significant improvements until we get the funds to deliver this desperately-needed extension.”
