We are being warned to stay out of the ocean as the clean up begins following last weekend’s wild weather.
While the waves may be big, they’re quite brown in the Northern Illawarra as the storm run-off continues to pour into the ocean.
Wollongong Council beach services manager Jason Foye confirms the water is quite dirty.
“There are a lot of branches, debris and other hazardous materials in the ocean at the moment,” he says, “which makes it potentially dangerous for swimmers and surfers,” he says.
“Although we have no evidence of sewage going into the water in the Northern Illawarra, the EPA has a standard warning following heavy rain. They say the excessive run-off affects water quality so urges us to stay out of the water for a few days.
“That’s the advice from Council too,” he says. “The Lifeguard Service strongly encourages people to avoid the water at least until tomorrow (Thursday).”
