Following on from the success of the Women’s 9’s Rugby at the Olympics, the Illawarra Division Rugby League continues to encourage local girls to play rugby league.
Already the Dragons have a women’s team (which includes four Helensburgh Tiger Lillies).
Now, the NSWNRL has announced they’re looking to develop a 9’s competition for U18 females next year, to run parallel with with NSW junior rep comps. The Women in Defence Illawarra League is well placed to establish a pathway to this elite competition.
Also, a new November 9’s will be run at Zeims Park Corrimal on Fridays in November in both Open and Under 18 divisions, in a bid to introduce new players to the game.
The 2017 Women in Defence League will also have an Under 18’s comp next year, run alongside the Open competition.
Illawarra Division Rugby League Manager Chris Bannerman is encouraging local clubs to create teams for the new November competition.
“Similarly, we encourage interested girls to get in touch with their local club, or contact Illawarra Rugby League, to be a part of this great future for Women’s Rugby League in the Illawarra.”
