Helensburgh has been named the most dangerous suburb in the state when it comes to feral deer, with eighteen major car accidents attributed to the animals since 2005.
Labor candidate Maryanne Stuart says her party has committed to spending $800 thousand dollars to tackle the situation.
“Wild deer numbers have been allowed to grow as existing management efforts lack funding and state-wide co-ordination,’ says Maryanne. “The Natural Resources Commission lists the Illawarra as one of four wild deer hotspots in NSW requiring urgent attention,” she says. “Compounding the problem, the Northern Illawarra Wild Deer Management Program administered by the NSW government, struggles to meet demand due to lack of resources.
‘‘NSW Labor is committed to addressing the problem and we today, call on the NSW Berejiklian government to match our funding commitment immediately. Residents, road users and their families need to feel safe.’
