Work appears to be nearing completion on Austinmer Rock Pools.
Safety rails have been installed on the eastern end, once again giving kids something to hang onto as they are smashed by the swell!
It’s taken three years for the repair work to reach this stage following problems with the initial contractor, the appointment of a new contractor, and difficult work and weather conditions which have continually delayed the progress.
Pre-cast concrete panels are still to be installed into the southern pool. Several attempts have been made to lift the panels into the pool wall, however each time the job has been thwarted. Now, they’re expected to be place before the end of this month, once again depending on tides, weather and swell.
Regardless of the difficulties, Wollongong City Council is committed to repairing the pool after a 2012 consultation process confirmed the value placed on the pool by the Northern Illawarra community.
