A truck has lost its trailer as it travelled on Otford Road with locals claiming this was because it was unable to cross Otford Rail Bridge.
They say this is proof their ‘newly-improved’ bridge is not fit-for-purpose!
The ‘Fix Otford Bridge’ campaigners say the Sydney Trains contractor’s truck was delivering equipment for last weekend’s track maintenance program when it tried unsuccessfully to cross Otford Bridge.
The bridge was too narrow for the truck to negotiate so it was forced to take the alternate route up the steep hill into Helensburgh.
Then the trailer came loose.
“The bridge was updated in 2014, supposedly to enable trucks to use the bridge without hitting the parapets,” says campaign spokesman Karen Lane.
“We will write to Wollongong Council because they claim the bridge meets engineering standards and complies with Council requirements,” she says, “however we believe if that’s the case, there is something wrong with Wollongong City Council’s policies and practices.”
