The kids at Otford School created a bush tucker garden last year, and are currently rejuvenating it with funds from their recent art show where they displayed and sold artworks to the school families and friends.
To complement the new garden, school pricipal Lesley Matthews, invited Kevin Butler to collaborate with the kids on a new mural – Kevin had previously worked with Lesley at Thirroul Public School to achieve a similar result.
“We had to raise some funds to pay for Kevin and originally it was coming out of a garden grant we had received.” said Narelle Happ, vice president of Otford School P&C, “I then suggested we have an Art Show and raise funds for the project – the children would be able to do the paintings as part of their visual arts component at school.”
“Since the art show, Kevin Butler has been working on two murals with the children and the children have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We will be having an official opening of the art works early in term 3 where Kevin and some Aboriginal elders will present the murals.”
“We are also hoping to upgrade the bushtucker garden which as with all school gardens has taken a bit of a battering from the children and the local wildlife.”
“It has been a great experience for the whole school community and the children were really proud of their art works at the art show. They are looking forward to having their work with Kevin displayed at the school.”
Donations toward the artwork and bush-tucker garden are still being accepted – contact Otford School for details.
