On July 11, Bulli’s Heritage Hotel comes alive with the music, the obsessions and the passions of Janis Joplin.
The show is the brainchild of the amazing Chris Keeble, whose recent production of Stevie (which told the story of the Easybeats frontman) was a knockout.
Chris says for Pearl, the Heritage Hotel will become a smoky, jazz and blues club, mixed with a healthy dose of pure acid bohemian vintage rock!
“Janis is a rock immortal whose individuality has become a hallmark which both shocked and inspired a generation,” says Chris.
“Her voice was dirtier than any other white chick singer and her story is no different.”
“She’s also one of the 27-club. Janie, Jimmy Hendrix, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse were all 27 when they died!”
Pearl- The Janis Joplin Story is musically directed by Thirroul local Jeremy Edwards. Jeremy is a singer, songwriter and guitarist who recently toured with winner of ‘The Voice’ Karise Eden, and has played with US Blues greats Charlie Musselwhite and John Hammond.
Starring as Janis is the amazing Liza Ohlback. “Liza is amazing,” says Chris. “She is a unique Blues singer laced with soul, jazz, and funk. She’s often compared to Aretha Franklin and Etta James and is a drawcard at many of the larger music festivals.”
Chris says the story of Janis Joplin is a sad one. “Janis is best-remembered for her rebellious lifestyle and her distinctive voice. She was found dead on October 4, 1970 from a heroin overdose. She’d had a rough upbringing in a depressing town in the US, then turned to heroin.
“Sadly, she died before the release of her critically-acclaimed album ‘Pearl’.
“To her friends, Janis was known as Pearl. This show is a musical interpretation of Janis’s story,” says Chris. “It’s in no way an impersonation.”
