Whilst in other areas of our patrol there has been a number of stealing offences being committed in retail stores and upon licensed premises there has been low numbers of incidents of criminal offences being committed in the township of Helensburgh.
Hoon driving around Maddens Plain and Otford is a regular occurrence as these areas are popular with the car ‘enthusiasts’ who visit from areas outside the Illawarra.
Police regularly patrol these locations and conduct operations which recently resulted in two vehicles being seen to engage in street racing along the Princes Highway at Darkes Forest. This incident was captured on Police in car video by the Highway Patrol who were able to covertly appear at the right time much to the surprise of the spectators and particularly the drivers engaged in street racing. As a result the two vehicles were impounded which means they stay off the road, stored by Police for a minimum period of 3 months. They can be released earlier but only if a Court order is obtained. The owner is liable for all towing and storage fees and the vehicle will not be released unless these fees are paid in full. A number of other vehicles were also inspected at the scene and found to have defects incurring fines.
Even though actual incidents of crime are low at this time we should not become complacent as a community and keep vigilant in reporting suspicious behaviour and incidents of crime as it was only recently break, enter and steal offences were impacting on Helensburgh.
