The Northern Illawarra attracts a new community every Christmas season, that is, visitors that come and stay to enjoy the Sea Cliff Coast lifestyle. While switching off from their working routine, there is an opportunity for them to discover alternative recreation such as yoga, despite their sedentary holiday mode.
“I’ve got a good base of people that come along who are pretty loyal, and the Moore Street Yoga Room is a great place to teach in… we started in that space before it was refurbished – now it’s all plush.” said Johnny Batchelor.
“I’ve had holiday yoga going for some years now and it’s a thing that I do from Boxing Day for about three weeks and it’s every morning at 9:30 – so people know it’s there and they can turn up as they please. Over the years this has also built up to include people that are here to visit their families over Christmas. So there are people that turn up almost every year, and I see them for three weeks, as well as the people that just turn up because they see that there is some yoga on.”
Johnny Batchelor’s popular Holiday Yoga classes are on again this year from December 26 to January 16, everyday at 9:30AM, at the Moore Street Yoga Room in Austinmer. These daily classes are fun, relaxed and varied, to suit the holiday mood, and are a perfect introduction for beginners or a great way for more experienced students to kick start the new year. From tweenies to seniors, everyone is welcome.
The classes run everyday, including Sundays and public holidays, and can be attended casually, as often as the mood takes you. There is also a Holiday Yoga Led Practice everyday at 7:30AM for the more experienced yogis who like an early start.
Holiday Yoga Classes are at 9:30AM – 11:00AM, and cost $17- for a casual visit ($14- concession/student) or a10 class pass can be purchased for $130- or a 5 class pass for $70-. There is no need to book, just turn up, but is a good idea to arrive early to ensure your place.
For experienced yoga practitioners and Johnny’s regular students, there is also the Holiday Led Yoga Practice, everyday at 7:30AM – 9:00AM. The led practice is an opportunity to follow a structured practice, within a group, while making a personal exploration of each posture and the possibilities of the sequence. Minimal verbal instruction is given, and participants are not corrected, but can follow visually. The led practice is therefore suitable for experienced yogis who are able to look after their own wellbeing throughout. The daily sequences given will be varied and aim to provide a well rounded practice over the 22 days and will also respond to fluctuations in the weather appropriately.
The led practice costs $10-/session or you can purchase a season pass (covering all 22 sessions) for $140-. Contact Johnny for further information, or you may just turn up.
Johnny is a highly qualified and experienced Iyengar Yoga teacher with regular classes running throughout the year in Austinmer and Unanderra.
Moore Street Yoga Room is at 62 Moore Street, Austinmer.
