Cooks from Ethiopia and Iraq, refugees who resettled in Wollongong, will be providing finger food at ART4refugees, the annual charity art show held at TIGS. The caterers are part of SCARF Catering, a micro enterprise run by SCARF (Strategic Community Assistance to refugee Families).
“We are delighted to offer people at the opening the chance to try this traditional food”, event organiser Benita Andrews said. “SCARF Catering has been a great success since it began this year, and we are excited about using them for this popular event, SCARF’s major fundraiser”.
SCARF runs numerous award winning programmes to help Humanitarian Visa refugees resettle in the Illawarra. “Homework Help has been running now for almost 7 years, helping primary and high school kids with tutoring”, according to Ms Andrews. Many students arrive here with no formal education after years in UNHCR refugee camps.
Music at the opening will be by the Emma Kelly Trio, a well-known local jazz ensemble. Clothing by Kabedi Designs, operated by a resident who resettled here from the Democratic Republic of Congo, will also be for sale throughout the show.
The Art4Refugees art show will be held at TIGS on September 27th – 29th . Donating artists can register through the ART4refugees websiteu and drop off their donations to reception at Permian Storage, 100 Montague St North Wollongong at any time. Organisers will be at Permian on Sat 14th and 21st Sept from 10am till 12pm.
SCARF gladly accepts donations of paintings (in any medium), photographs, sculpture, textiles, jewellery and ceramics. Works can be originals donated by the artist or pre loved works which are clean and ready to hang.
