Shadow Minister for the Illawarra Ryan Park has responded to complaints about traffic through Thirroul, with locals saying the problem is getting progressively worse.
Each morning, southbound traffic extends back to Kennedy’s Hill, with weekends also a problem as beachgoers clog Lawrence Hargrave Drive from Austinmer back to Bulli Pass.
Increased development is being blamed for the problem, however it’s all the traffic lights between Thirroul and Bulli that have caused outrage on the Northern Illawarra Facebook Page.
Mr Park, who is also the Keira MP, says he is aware of the problems facing the southern end of Lawrence Hargrave Drive.
“We are looking at the creation of overtaking areas to allow traffic to pass,” he says. “We also need to have a serious look at the timing of the lights along that stretch so when there are large numbers of cars backed up, traffic can be managed to flow in the appropriate direction.
“I’ll certainly be raising this with the Government and making sure they are aware of the urgency of this problem.
“The Northern Suburbs of Wollongong is unique in terms of road constraints and we need to have a look at all our options. I sincerely hope we get a favourable consideration from the government.”
